First there was Girt. Now comes ...True GirtIn this side-splitting sequel to his best-selling history, David Hunt transports us to the Australian frontier. At last a history of Australia not afraid to tell the truth and not afraid of how ridiculous our history really is. Well written, witty and socially relevant to Australia today, Girt Vol 1 & True Girt Vol 2 are both a worthwhile addition to any bookshelf. I have some minor quibbles about the depth and direction of some of the etymological research. For instance, the author seems unaware of the nuances of Síle na Giġ underlying Oz slang for a female. And while many believe "yakka" derives from an Aboriginal language, a plausible alternative can be found in the Irish "deacair". But at least the author has travelled far enough in his research to raise the etymology of both. I also appreciate the debt to Terry Pratchett, particularly in his approach to footnoting.
